Master Berry - SaBum Nim and Chief Instructor

Master Berry was born in Charlotte, N.C. on June 30, 1977. He began his training in the Martial Arts in 1994 under Master Robert Summers. He achieved his First Degree Black Belt on November 23, 1996. Master Berry trained and taught under the daily guidance of Grand Master Summers from 1996 to 2001. During his five years as Assistant Instructor, Master Berry's knowledge of the Martial Arts and Martial Arts Instruction grew tremendously. In late 1998, he had the opportunity to test for Second Degree Black Belt. Through his dedication and with great guidance, Master Berry had gained the respect of his peers and colleagues as a true Martial Artist.

His next step in a life of Martial Arts would come in May of 2001, when he opened the doors to the R.T. Berry School of Tae Kwon-Do in Mooresville, N.C. Keeping with his close ties and loyalty to Grand Master Summers, the R.T. Berry School of Tae Kwon-Do is a Proud Member of The Robert Summers Association. In December of 2001, Master Berry had the opportunity to test for and achieved his Third Degree Black Belt in front of a panel of Master Instructors from all over the east coast including Master Summers, his instructor.

From 2001 through 2006, Master Berry's visions for his School and the Students within it were becoming clear to all of those involved. His focus on the students was evident daily at the School. In late 2005, Berry was told by his Instructor, Grand Master Summers, that his time was coming to take his next personal step in Martial Arts training by testing for Master and SaBum Nim. Master Berry's focus on his school was evident as he presented himself on March 18th, 2006 and earned the title of SaBum Nim. In the Robert Summers Association, this title is only given to those who are Fourth Degree or higher, and are giving their life to lead others through Martial Arts. Master Berry's Students and Families were all invited to watch, and with over 500 people in attendance, the R.T. Berry School became a SaBum Nim School under Master Berry's guidance.

For Master Berry, the continued journey with his students is what he looks most forward to. He enjoys his time with his students, both inside and outside of the Do Jang, and is truly happiest when serving his School.

"A strong leader builds a foundation of strong leaders to better serve those involved with his or her institution."

Master Berry's Brigade:

"What I have seen since I began training here is the impact that Master Berry’s system of Tae Kwon Do has on the whole child. They learn respect, discipline, gain self esteem and learn how to cope in today’s society. It is incredible to see how all of the kids respond to consistency and direction. Many students have entered the program being diagnosed with a variety of Pervasive Developmental Disorders, including autism, tourettes syndrome , SID, aspergers, ADD and ADHD. The amazing thing is regardless of whether or not a student here has a diagnosis they all get the same thing out of the program. They all become Awesome Master Berry Tae Kwon Do Kids. They all become stronger individuals and learn how to give back. I have been able to use what I have learned from Master Berry’s philosophy on teaching children as a tool in my own line of work and have thoroughly enjoyed the results."
